Dr. Abhijeet L. Wahegaonkar is a Fellowship trained Orthopedic Upper Extremity, Hand & Microvascular Reconstructive Surgeon with more than 15 years of exclusive experience in the comprehensive management of upper extremity problems, with a strong emphasis on academics and research.

After completing his residency in Orthopedic Surgery, he has received training in Hand Surgery, Microvascular Surgery, and Brachial Plexus & Peripheral Nerve Surgery in various prestigious institutes in the USA, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland including the world famous Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand & Micro Surgery for a period of 16 months and as a Research Fellow at the Mayo Clinic in the USA for a period of 2 years. He has recently been appointed Professor in Hand Surgery (Adjunct Title) by the Apollo Hospitals Education and Research Foundation.

His special interests include wrist surgery, adult & obstetrical brachial plexus surgery, microvascular reconstructive surgery, small joint arthroscopic surgery of the upper extremity & treatment of congenital hand deformities.

Dr. Wahegaonkar has received several awards during his career as an academic hand surgeon. Selected recent awards include:

  • “Young Investigator Award” of the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation of the United States ($100,000) for his research on nerve allografts in brachial plexus surgery

  • “The D.P. Baksi Gold Medal” at the Indian Orthopaedic Association Annual Conference in 2011 for Best Paper in Elbow surgery

  • The Carl-Zeiss Travelling Fellowship

  • He is also listed in the Marquis “Who’s Who in the World” since 2009

  • He has been appointed as a “Visiting Professor” in Wrist Arthroscopy and Surgery to Taiwan and France since 2009

Research & Education

While active in research and clinical practice, he is dedicated to many social & charitable activities. Outside of clinical practice, he enjoys biking, trekking & hiking, basketball, music, medical illustration & photography and traveling with his family.

Dr. Abhijeet maintains an enthusiastic interest in clinical medicine, research, and education. He has 24 peer reviewed publications and 6 textbook chapters to his credit. He has read more than 60 papers in International & National conferences. He is faculty to various Institutes, Teaching courses, Conferences & Seminars.
